Ages
6-13
Each summer, Wellspring
offers their summer riding camp. This is very popular with the younger
children between the ages of 6-13. Each year, this program has a waiting
list, so it is important to register early.
Most of these children who participate have had little experience with
horses and the program teaches them the basics which include:
Basic
horsemanship under saddle (ride every day)
Safety on and around horses
Grooming
Tacking up, untacking, cleaning and care of tack
General care of the horse
The anatomy of the horse
Games on and off horseback
Friday morning horse shows for family and friends
Crafts and activities
The students ride each day and are taught the correct basics of seat and
hands. The campers always enjoy games on horseback such as pole bending
and dollar bareback.
On Friday there is a special horse show for the group, and ribbons are
awarded.

Many of the students sign-up for several weeks of the program, and the
more experienced always pitch-in and help the younger children. At the
end of the summer many of these children stay and move into group lessons
already in progress. Often they will remain on as working students.
